A Few Surprises For Us All

Friday, January 29th, 2010

The other day Shane and I agreed to combine our wedding needs with birthday/holiday gifts. Not only will this save money, but I personally think that our wedding day will mean more if we are surrounded by gifts from each other on the Big Day. To be able to look at something and say “he got me that for my 25th birthday” or “I got that for him on our second Valentine’s Day together” will bring together where we have been with where we are headed.

Just a few moments ago I received via UPS one of the first official wedding items….but I can’t say what it is! The same day that we agreed to this, I immediately started planning both Shane’s Valentine’s Day and birthday presents–both of which are quickly approaching. I’ll give you all one hint: one of these items says “Mrs. Shane Freese”. Lol. That’s not much of a hint, is it? Haha. Oh well. Soon enough we all will know, and I’ll be able to post pictures of these BEAUTIFUL things!

Getting Creative

Because of our tight budget, I’ve been racking my brain trying to come up with creative ways to save money without sacrificing style. While flipping through some wedding magazines, I eventually made my way to an epiphany of how to save on flowers. I had been planning on making all the bouquets, etc. myself with silk flowers, not only to save money but also so that they could be kept forever as mementos. I definitely want to keep the details for a surprise at the event (that’s going to be hard with more than a year to go).

Basically, I will be hand-crafting all centerpieces, bouquets, boutonnieres, and even my garter decoration. Vaguely referencing the textile art exhibitions I loved to attend during college at IU’s SoFA gallery, they will be more art than actual flower arrangements. These will also be given as favors or gifts for the bridal party and possibly family, depending on how many there are.

Needless to say, this will definitely be a wedding to remember!

Since I’ve come to a stopping point in many of my projects, I’ll be taking a few hours today to get more updates done around the site. Next stop: photos from the engagement party! Wait. That means I actually need to find my camera….

Centerpieces & Such

Tuesday, July 7th, 2009

I’m mainly writing this so that I don’t forget these ideas. Two years is a long enough time to forget simple, rather insignificant details, and I don’t want to forget!

As I was browsing through the magazines and catalogs accumulated from friends, family, and Borders, I quickly began to realize that one major cost of a wedding could very well be favors for guests. My friend Amy is starting her own Green Living and Consulting business and I am creating her website for her. She has some oils and different, creative recipes for all sorts of things, so I turned to her for some ideas of inexpensive, unique favors. Boy, did she deliver!

There are endless options for what we could do, but the two that sound the best to me are having essential oils (lavendar, Shane’s favorite scent; and maybe some vanilla, one of my favorite scents) in bottles with a lid and dropper, and some sort of herb mix (like Chocolate Mint!) in tulle sachets or some other cheap container. Both would come with a label with a link to recipes and different uses for each thing. For example, the Chocolate Mint could be used for tea, cooking, or could be hung in the bathroom while showering and would make the whole room smell good. We could also grow our own herbs, and everyone could know it was “grown with love”. Lol.

Amy also mentioned that we could use the oils in centerpieces so that the entire room would smell good during the reception. She gave me the link to her wholesale supplier’s website, and that spurred some more ideas. A while ago I had the idea of putting reed diffusers in silk flower arrangements so that the flowers wouldn’t die but would still smell up the room. Well, I’m thinking of doing that for the centerpieces and just having a little bit of oil in the bottom. Then I think I would be able to have them ready at least a week (probably more) before the wedding and cut down on the things I have to do right before it. Or, I could put them together months before the wedding and just put the oil in a few days before hand.

Plenty of options, plenty of time. I’m just glad that I’ve found a rather economical and unique solution to yet another thing! Our month is going to be rather busy. We’re heading to Bloomington Saturday to check out the venues at the IMU. With the help of my mom, we got Xavier’s room painted and will be putting the final touches on this week hopefully, then moving in the furniture and getting the garage somewhat clean. Then we have our engagement pictures on the 18th, my family reunion the 25th, and Shane has fishing tournaments both of those nights. I’ve been moving along on the projects I have for some clients while trying to find a full time position to help pay for all of this wedding stuff. I think its definitely for the best that we’ve decided to push back the engagement party to October. We’ll need a weekend off after all of this. :)

Happily Ever After Starts Here

Friday, June 26th, 2009

After emailing with the photographer more, I found out that the Happily Ever After Starts Here sign was already hanging on the gate when they took the photo. Thanks to Google, I found the same sign on Etsy. They can make the sign with any colors to match your wedding. So, this was my first official purchase for the wedding.

We’ll be using it for the engagement photos as well as decor at the wedding. I’ve been thinking of using Etsy for some of the “spare parts” of the wedding. They have a lot of neat, vintage, original stuff on there. I’ve always loved the site. I might be able to find some things on there for far less than vintage stores, too, such as jewelry and creative gifts for the wedding party. (I’m also thinking of selling some stuff on there, too.)

The Summer Bridal Show is this Sunday at The Mansion on the north side. Belinda will be joining me, so I’m sure we’ll have tons of fun.
